Hello. My name is Travis and I am 27 years old. I am moving from Southern Florida to New York City for a much higher paying job. It is quite a jump but told myself that I wanted to give city life a try for a bit and see how I like it. I am from a very rural town in Tampa, Florida. I went to the University of Southern Florida in Tampa, studied nursing, and became a nurse practitioner after a graduating from graduate school.
I worked at their hospital upon graduation for 3 years. My girlfriend got a job in New York after graduating from Business School. So she is moving there and I want to go with her. So I started looking for jobs there a couple months ago and scored this nice gig at a private hospital downtown. It is a really rich community and it is nice. I will be working as a flight nurse.
The job pays nearly double what I was getting paid in Florida. But the cost of living is much more expensive in New York City than in Tampa. Nearly 3 times as much. Housing is insanely expensive in New York City. I was living in a nice place by the beach in a decent area in Tampa for $650 a month. If I wanted a decent one bedroom in Manhattan, it would probably be at least $2500 per month.
I live on Mercy Street off the J Line. It is dirty here but the rent is cheap, there is a lot of young educated professionals, and the area is not too dangerous at night as long you are aware of your surroundings. We split a two bedroom apartment with another couple. The total unity is $3800 per month. After paying for internet and utilities, everyone pays just about $1000 per month. What a steal. We found it on Craigslist.
So I just moved to New York City from Tampa, Florida. Things are different here up north. First of all, the weather sucks. It is so much colder here in the winter. It is almost unbearable. In Florida, the coldest it ever gets is 40 degrees. That is on a really bad day.
Second of all, people are a little more uptight. But it is not as bad as I expected. I thought everyone would be rude as hell but I have already met some nice people. Overall, they are not that bad but people are definitely nicer in Florida than they are here. Third, this city is really dirty. I live in Brooklyn and commute into Manhattan for work.
I think I fall into that category. I have come across a couple and no one is actually from New York. That is really funny. I have met people from Louisiana, Wisconsin, Kansas, Colorado, California, and New Jersey. I do not feel so out of place now and feels it good.
This city has a lot to do. It is pretty crazy. The bar scene is Manhattan is crazy. There is plenty to do during the day and a lot of people to meet. This place definitely moves a lot faster than the Florida. I suppose this is what people pay so much money for here. I like it so far, I think I will be in for an interesting ride.
